Welcome to the Journey! Esther de Waal, an author and student of Benedictine spirituality, has described the spiritual life as “a series of open doors.” Robert Imbelli, a priest and scholar of conversion in adulthood, has described the new Christian as “facing an open future.” The spiritual life hinges on this “openness” – how we walk through those doors, how we face the unknown in life, how we recognize and respond to God’s invitation every day. Like so many of you, a good deal of my spiritual journey has been spent searching – for answers, for the right community, or for my right place in it – in short, for the way to best live out my life according to God’s will. This search took some years, ranged from East to West, explored terrains from New York to Tuscany to the Celtic Arc, and embraced many studies, saints, and friends along the way. With time, patience, and faith, I began to see the pattern of my life – where I had been, where I arrived spiritually, and where I might continue to go. But throughout my searching, God was always there. As the old Survivor songs says: “The search is over – You were with me all the while.” I believe that God heals the earth one heart at a time. Every person’s journey is unique and occurs in its own time. That’s the blessing of it. We cannot be rushed. We have a lifetime (and perhaps beyond) to learn, love, and reconcile. And so I invite you to return to this page. Visit and read the other reflections, as well as the new ones that will be posted each week. Add my page to your list of Favorites, and feel free to send an email with your thoughts or topical questions. Here’s to the Journey! I look forward to our time together.
